The popularity of Carrier Ethernet in the telco industry is on the rise due to the network benefits and compelling services it enables, such as more cost-effective bandwidth and enabling cloud computing services. However, while Carrier Ethernet has brought many opportunities, it has introduced some performance management challenges for communications service providers (CSPs), as well.
For instance, in North America, the majority of Ethernet customers require service-level reporting to understand how their networks are running and how services are performing. But, only a small percentage actually accesses the provided reporting–so, there is a significant gap between what information customers expect from their CSPs and what they are actually receiving.
CSPs instead need to look beyond basic SLAs and proactively provide real-time usage information about customers' services, including business-class services with Multi-CoS, so that when there is a problem, they are aware and can address them efficiently and effectively. CSPs should also demonstrate the resiliency and business-grade capability of their Ethernet services in their reporting and empower customers with service quality visualization.
At Light Reading Ethernet Expo 2012, I will participate in a panel, which will be moderated by Stan Hubbard, senior analyst at Heavy Reading, that will address this and other challenges and opportunities associated with delivering Carrier Ethernet 2.0 service performance assurance. I invite you to attend the session on Tuesday, November 6th at 3:45 p.m., or come visit our booth (#222) to discuss further and learn the three steps for accelerating the growth of your Carrier Ethernet service revenues.
